NID Classes in Vellore

The National Institute of Design, commonly referred to as NID, is the most sought-after design school in India. Established in 1961, NID is one of only two Indian design colleges, alongside IDC, IIT-Bombay, to be recognized in Business Week’s Top 50 Design Schools in the World. The NID entrance exam, known as the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) or the National Entrance Examination for Design (NEED), is highly regarded and considered one of the toughest entrance exams for design in India, alongside IDC’s CEED. There is no specific syllabus for preparing for the DAT or NEED, as the questions are based on fundamental topics such as Communication Skills, Composition, Creativity, Drawing Skills, General Mental Ability, Sensitivity to Environment, and Subjects of Design.

Both the B.Des and M.Des programs feature the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) which consists of two phases: the first being a written test and the second a Studio Test.

**B.Des Admission Process**

*Phase 1:* This 3-hour test is worth 100 marks and includes both visual and textual questions, designed to assess the candidate’s aptitude for Design Problem Solving, Visual Sense, Observation & Perception, Environmental Awareness, Mental Ability, and Communication Skills.

*Phase 2:* This phase includes a Studio Test, followed by a Personal Interview and Portfolio Presentation. The Studio Test is divided into three parts: Doodling, 3D Modeling, and Observation Test.

**M.Des Admission Process:**

*Phase 1:* This 3-hour test is also worth 100 marks and is divided into two parts, each lasting 1.5 hours. Part A is a Common Foundation Paper worth 40 marks, while Part B is a Specialization Paper worth 60 marks. Similar to the B.Des process, this test evaluates the candidate’s aptitude for Design Problem Solving, Visual Sense, Observation & Perception, Environmental Awareness, Mental Ability, and Communication Skills.

*Phase 2:* This phase consists of a Studio Test, followed by a Personal Interview and Portfolio Presentation, with the Studio Test also comprising three parts: Doodling, 3D Modeling, and Observation Test.

**Tips to Prepare for NID Exam:**

The DAT is quite similar to CEED regarding the types of questions asked and the required preparation. Here are some tips to help you get started: 

- Master the art of sketching quickly and flawlessly, not just the skill itself. 

- Enhance your sketching abilities by enrolling in NID preparation classes, such as Launchpad’s Diploma in Car Design program, if beneficial. 

- Review previous year NEED question papers available online and subscribe to exam preparation guides, both online and offline. 

- Engage with designers and fellow design students in online communities to compare your work, get feedback on your sketching skills, and seek suggestions.
